One of the sad things about life is that sometimes life gets in the way of living. What I mean by that is sometimes things like school, work, family, relationships, etc. get in the way of just letting yourself live. Living is constituted a variety of things but a part of living, I believe at least, is taking the time to enjoy everything and nothing. Doing something you are passionate about for a day. Doing nothing but sleeping all day. Doing something that is a new experience for you.
On April 18th, after a long 3 weeks of endless working, I decided I was going to give myself a day off from the business of the usual day. Rather than studying or doing homework or planning out the coming week, I decided to have a mental rest day. So, I woke up at 11:30am (aka very late), had brunch, changed into a different outfit, and strolled over to the closest coffee shop from where I live.
I pondered what I was going to do once I arrived at the location on the way down there. I could write a new short story. I could listen to some music and read articles. I could watch daily vlogs on YouTube. Or perhaps I would finish a blog piece that I’d left unfinished a while ago.
When I finally got to my destination and sat down at a table with a hot tea in hand, I’d decided. Today seemed like a good day for TED Talks. Entertainment AND educational material all at once? Why, that does seem like a winner. For me, it felt like the perfect way to have a nice day off for myself.
But as we have heard since we were children, “sharing is caring.” So, listed below are a few of my favorite TED Talks watched thus far. If you have time, or even if you don’t have time, and want to have a little time just for yourself, check out some of these talks below.
Julia Sweeney “Letting Go of God”:
http://www.ted.com/talks/julia_sweeney_on_letting_go_of_god?language=en
A comedic story-like talk about how one woman began to rethink her faith and religion.
Hannah Fry “The Mathematics of Love”:
https://www.ted.com/talks/hannah_fry_the_mathematics_of_love?language=en
Math really is… everywhere. A funny and interesting talk connecting love and mathematics.
Richard Dawkins “Militant Atheism”:
https://www.ted.com/talks/richard_dawkins_on_militant_atheism
An older TED Talk, but one as relevant as ever. A serious but witty and dryly funny way to approach the subject of evolution versus creationism.
