1 ) Happy Fourth of July Weekend For Most, Not For All
Most of us had a pretty chill (or wild, guess it depends on the person) July 4th with friends and family. Fireworks, of course, are a traditional part of the celebrations on Independence Day Weekend. With Texas no longer in a drought, fire bans have been lifted statewide and fireworks have made a healthy return. No doubt, people across Texas and the nation were excited for a relaxing weekend and the opportunity to legally explode things in the sky. While most people’s July 4th weekend ended safely, in Calais,Maine, Devon Staples alcohol-fueled decision to light a firework on top of his head led to tragedy. Staples and his friends were together when the incident occurred. Friends thought the victim was joking when he said he would light a firework on top his head.
2 ) Fisher Keeps Swimming Back (To Many American’s Chagrin)
Abigail Fisher and friends are back at it again! This time, Fisher v. The University of Texas will be heard in the Supreme Court of the United States. The SCOTUS trial will be the fourth time this case will be heard in a court. Fisher, her attorneys, and anti-affirmative action groups continue to claim that Fisher was denied entrance to The University of Texas due to a racial bias. Information that Fisher’s academic performance was not up to UT standards for admittance, and that the overwhelming majority of her peers that were admitted to UT with scores equal or lower than her were white has not deterred Fisher or her supporters. Many question whether or not her case even has any standing.
3 ) Paula Deen Riding Things
The title for this part of Quick Read has nothing to do with the latest news about the Butter Queen (but I do encourage clicking on it). In 2013, Paula Deen was caught using the n-word in a video and just being racist in general. Deen apologized but could not hide from the media and public backlash towards her. It’s been two years and the butter-filled front has been quiet… until now! Deen tweeted and posted on Facebook a picture of her and her son in costume as Lucy and Desi from the show “I Love Lucy.” The outrage towards Deen started rolling in when people noticed that her son was in brownface. She has since deleted the picture.
4 ) Starbucks: Breaking My Heart
Starbucks has recently announced a price hike for its brewed coffee and frappuccino beverages. The price hikes will range from five cents to twenty cents depending on the size and type of drink customers buy. The pricing change begins today. Starbucks claims their decision is necessary to provide value to customers without becoming unprofitable. Starbucks also raised prices in 2014 and in 2013. But for those who don’t care about the price increase and love cold brew, Starbucks has announced that it will be offering cold brew in all stores starting this week.
